Last Wednesday 15th March, the team had an away day (or more, an away half day) visiting the impressive Apex Digital Graphics Real Print & Finish Open House http://www.realprintandfinish.com/ It was a gorgeous sunny day and we were all really excited to have a look at the new machinery on the market both in the print and finishing fields. Also it was an opportunity for Fred to ‘talk turkey’ with the guys demonstrating the machines and he was in his element I can tell you!
It was a bit like going to a car showroom, and a high end one at that. There were all these great big gleaming machines, all claiming to be the best in their field, but you know you’ll need to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford anything.
Anyway, we were really excited to see the new Ryobi (RMGT) LED-UV machine which uses state of the art drying technology. What this means is that rather than waiting for printing to dry using a traditional litho machine, the printing comes off the press completely dry, so it can go straight onto the next process, be it binding, folding or cutting. We were not disappointed – the machine was an absolute beast! Costing upwards of £1 million and at least 20 feet long, it was such an impressive piece of kit. For the print geeks out there amongst you, you can see more details here http://www.apexdigital.co.uk/LED%20UV.html
We also saw some fantastic finishing equipment for stitching, perfect binding, automatic folding, booklet making and a really impressive foilant laminator.
All in all it was great to have a few hours out of the office (and on the warmest day of the year so far) and to have a look at all the latest machines out there, that with a spare few hundred thousand in the bank you wouldn’t hesitate to snap up. Carly and I will try and work our magic on Dad but somehow, I don’t think we’ll get him to shell out a million pounds on an LED-UV machine, no matter how hard we try!
